March 25, 2013
CHICAGO – After pounding the ball all weekend, Staci Bonezek was greeted with a well-deserved accolade on Monday.
The DePaul sophomore catcher was named to the BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll for the first time in her career after helping lead the Blue Demons to a three-game BIG EAST series sweep of Providence over the weekend in Rhode Island.
Bonezek blasted the game-winning, two-run home run in the Blue Demons’ 5-3 victory over the Friars at Saturday’s BIG EAST season opener. She went 3-for-3 in that game with the homer, a double, three RBIs and a run scored.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, her three-run blast helped turn a 6-5 deficit into a 13-6 comeback win. The Blue Demons trailed 6-5 when Bonezek sparked a five-run outburst in the sixth inning.
For the doubleheader, Bonezek was 5-for-7 (.714) with two home runs, two doubles, six RBIs and three runs.
That wasn't enough as Bonezek capped off the three-game series on Sunday going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
In the three-game series, Bonezek went 7-for-12 (.583) from the No. 7 spot in the batting order with two home runs, three doubles, nine RBIs and three runs.
“We hit the ball well all three games, and Staci kept us going,” said DePaul coach Eugene Lenti. “She had the best weekend of all.”
In BIG EAST games, Bonezek entered the week tied with teammate Allie Braden for the league lead in doubles. She was second in RBIs, third in total bases, tied for third in home runs and hits and eighth in batting average.
The home opener for DePaul (16-12, 3-0) is a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday against Pittsburgh (13-13, 2-1) at Cacciatore Stadium.
