USA National Team Tops DePaul in Exhibition Game



Oklahoma City, Okla. Marie Thompson, Becca Heteniak and Marcy Wilus all registered hits in DePaul’s 23-0 loss to the USA National Team, Wednesday at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

“Today was fun, regardless of the outcome. This was a good day for our program,” head coach Eugene Lenti said after the loss.  “By facing the best players and pitchers in the world we will become a more confident, stronger and a better team.”

DePaul assistant coach Cat Osterman threw the first three innings for the National team.  She struck out eight and only Thompson got a hit off her. Thompson’s hit was just the fifth Osterman has given up in 26.0 inning of work during the Bound for Beijing Tour.

The National team tagged DePaul starter Lindsey Dean for 13 runs in the first inning.  Team USA had three home runs, and four doubles in the first frame.

Heteniak entered the circle for the the Blue Demons in the second inning.  She did not allow a hit, but three runs were scored as Heteniak walked three and two fielding errors allowed the runs.

Lisa Fernandez threw the final three innings for Team USA.  In the fourth inning, Wilus and Heteniak knocked back-to- singles for DePaul’s final hits of the ballgame.

Fernandez, faced 11 batters and struck out two.

Lauren Frankiewicz threw the final two innings for the Blue Demons; she scattered nine hits for seven runs. 

Jessica Mendoza went 4-for-5 to lead Team USA with seven RBI.  Mendoza had two doubles and a home run in the contest. Andrea Duran finished with five RBI and had two home runs, both in the first inning.

The Blue Demons welcome Notre Dame and open BIG EAST Conference play on Sunday, March 30.  The conference doubleheader is slated to begin at Noon at Cacciatore Stadium.
