ST. LOUIS – The No. 9 (ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll) DePaul softball team beat Saint Louis 4-0 on Thursday in the third and final game of their conference series. Sarah Douglas hit a three-run homer and Lindsay Chouinard pitched a two-hitter to help the Blue Demons increase their record to 18-4 (5-1 C-USA).
The Demons managed nine hits off Billiken pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl who earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 17-23 and who beat the Demons in a 1-0 victory on Wednesday.
DePaul left seven runners on base but still managed to come out on top. The first run was scored in the top of the fourth inning. Saskia Roberson singled to left field and Laura Visin entered to pinch run for her.
In the first five innings, the Blue Demons’ defense and pitching kept each of the Billiken’s batters from reaching first base. It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth that Saint Louis could get a fourth batter to the plate in one inning.
The Billikens only two hits came in the bottom of the seventh as they crushed Chouinard’s chance for a no-hitter. They put two on base with a fielder’s choice and a double but couldn’t finish the job to rally back.
Chouinard pitched all seven innings and registered three strikeouts while allowing no earned runs and just two hits. Her record improves to 10-3.
The team heads to Houston for their next conference series that starts with a double-header on Saturday and finishes with a single game on Sunday at Noon. The Cougars are 22-13 overall and sit at the top of the conference with a C-USA record of 6-0. They face Alabama A&M on Thursday before taking on the Blue Demons over the weekend.
