Blue Demons Take Game One at Connecticut

STORRS, Conn.   The No. 23/21 DePaul softball team used a pair of big innings to top BIG EAST Conference rival Connecticut 5-0 on Saturday in game one a league doubleheader at the UConn Softball Stadium.

Becca Heteniak(8-4) threw her first shut out of the season.  The junior right handed pitcher threw a complete game, while she allowed just four hits and struck out six.

After playing through three scoreless innings, Brittney Yniguez put the Blue Demons (15-7, 3-0 BIG EAST) on the board with a two-RBI double to right center in the top of the fourth.  Yniguez’s double plated Heteniak and Lynsey Ciezki, who reached on a fielder’s choice and walk earlier in the frame.

Heteniak added an exclamation point to her day in the sixth when she blasted a three-run home run to dead center to give DePaul its final runs of the ball game in the sixth frame.  Heteniak’s long ball was her fourth of the season and her second in as many games. The junior leads the Blue Demons with 28 RBI, while six of those have come this week.

Tricia Sullivan suffered the loss for Connecticut (14-9, 2-3 BIG EAST), she scattered nine hits, walked one and all five runs were earned.

Amber Patton, who leads the Blue Demons and BIG EAST Conference with a .479 average, led DePaul with a 3-for-4 effort.  Yniguez also knocked a pair of hits for DePaul.

The Blue Demons conclude their doubleheader with the Huskies later this afternoon.
