Notre Dame Tops Blue Demons

CHICAGO   Notre Dame halted No. 17/24 DePaul’s 25-game regular season BIG EAST Conference winning streak on Sunday with a 2-0 victory at Cacciatore Stadium.  The Irish improve to 17-10 and 1-1 in conference play, while the Blue Demons fall to 20-10 and 1-1 in league action.

Notre Dame’s Linda Kohan put the Irish on the board with a solo home run in the second inning.

The Irish padded their lead in the fourth when DePaul left fielder Stephanie Blagaich dropped a fly ball in shallow left center field.  The dropped ball allowed Katie Fluery, who walked to begin the frame, to score Notre Dame’s final run of the ballgame.

Jody Valdiva (4-5) and Brittany Bargar handled the pitching duties for Notre Dame.  Valdiva got the start and threw 5.2 innings before being replaced by Bargar.  Valdiva scattered five hits, struck out two and walked three. She left runners on first and second when Bargar entered the game in the sixth.  Bargar retired all four batters she faced for the save.

Lauren Frankiewicz (7-3) took the loss and threw her seventh complete game of the season.  She allowed just four hits, while striking out nine and walking three.

Frankiewicz helped her own cause at the plate and led the Blue Demons with a 2-for-3 effort.

The Blue Demons and Irish split Sunday’s doubleheader.  DePaul won game one, 2-1.

DePaul’s last conference loss came on April 29, 2006 a 3-1 loss at USF.

The Blue Demons break from BIG EAST play on Thursday, April 3 when they welcome Valparaiso for a 3 p.m. doubleheader in Lincoln Park.
