Becca Heteniak Named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. DePaul junior pitcher Becca Heteniak was named the BIG EAST Conference’s Pitcher of the Week after throwing a pair of complete-games and allowing just one earned run last week. Notre Dame’s Beth Northway earned the league’s Player of the Week after her consistent bat helped the Irish run their winning streak to seven games.   The awards were announced prior to DePaul’s 8-0 win over Providence on Monday.

Heteniak was in the circle for two of the Blue Demon’s three wins last week. In complete games at Illinois and Connecticut, the junior boasted a 0.50 ERA, including a 5-0 shutout over the Huskies on March 28. For the week, Heteniak struck out 11 while opposing batters averaged just .184 against her. With the win over the Huskies on Saturday, Heteniak has recorded a win in her last 17 BIG EAST decisions and improves to 27-2 all-time against league opponents. The junior was strong from the plate as well, knocking out a pair of three-run home runs with a .444 batting average.

A junior, Heteniak has picked up five previous Pitcher of the Week honors, while this is her first in 2009.  She was named the league’s Player of the Week earlier this season.

Northway came through in pinch-hitting duties for Notre Dame with nine hits in 16 at-bats. Northway hit for a .562 batting average and 1.125 slugging percentage in the six contests.

Jackie Tarulli-Fisher joined Heteniak as she was named to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll.  With a .455 average at the plate, Tarulli-Fisher moved her season-long hitting streak to six games last week.  The senior belted a pair of home runs at Connecticut in game two, while she tallied five RBI on five hits last week.

The Blue Demons (17-7, 5-0 BIG EAST) return to Cacciatore Stadium this weekend for league double-headers with Seton Hall and Pittsburgh.  Saturday’s twinbill with the Pirates is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. (CST).
