Yniguez Sends DePaul Past Pitt in Game Two to Complete the Doubleheader Sweep

CHICAGO -- With the game tied at three and as hail began to fall at Cacciatore Stadium, DePaul’s Brittney Yniguez launched her second home run of the season to lift the Blue Demons past Pittsburgh.  DePaul (20-8, 8-1 BIG EAST) topped Pitt 7-3 in game two of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

Pittsburgh (15-18, 3-9) struck first and scored a pair of runs on Kristen Cheesebrew’s two RBI double to the fence in center in the third frame.

The Blue Demons immediately got a run back in the bottom of the third when Lynsey Ciezki laid down a perfect sacrifice to allow Sean Plese to score from third.

Like a see-saw the Panthers answered in the fourth when DePaul starter Lauren Frankiewicz walked  Niki Cognigni with the bases loaded to take a 3-1 advantage.

The Blue Demons battled and were patient at the plate as four walks and a pass ball netted DePaul two runs and a tie score.

Yniguez’s long ball followed in the fifth which proved to be the eventual game winner.

As hail and rain continued to fall, DePaul batted around the order in the seventh and took advantage two Pitt errors to score its final three runs of the game.

Amber Patton bolstered her BIG EAST best average of .505 with a 3-for-3 day.  The senior All-American also drew an intentional walk. Jackie Tarulli-Fisher and Yniguez accounted for DePaul’s two other hits.

Frankiewicz (3-1) earned the win, she threw five innings before being replaced by Becca Heteniak in the sixth.  Frankiewicz scattered four hits, while only one of Pitts’ runs were earned.  The duo combined for seven strikeouts and four walks.

Pittsburgh starter Kayla Zinger (2-9) suffered the loss.

The Blue Demons return to action tomorrow when they host Southern Utah in a nonconference game at Cacciatore Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Lincoln Park.
