Blue Demons Capture Their Third Shutout Over Southern Miss

CHICAGO – The DePaul softball team shut out Southern Miss 6-0 on Sunday in the final game of a three-game conference series.  The No. 10 Blue Demons, 24-2 (11-1 C-USA), out hit the Golden Eagles 10-2 and Saskia Roberson hit her sixth home run of the season to help capture the win and to sweep the series.

DePaul came out swinging in the first inning and scored two runs to get the momentum going.  Liz Bouck (3-for-3) and Sarah Martz (2-for-4) both singled to the shortstop to lead off the inning.  Both runners advanced on a Southern Miss error.  Sarah Douglas (1-for2) came through with a single to center field that allowed Martz and Bouck to score.

Roberson (1-for-4) wasted no time when she led off the inning in the bottom of the third.  She sent her second home run of the series over center field to increase the lead to 3-0.

The fourth inning was even more dramatic as DePaul’s offense resembled something of Saturday’s hitting spree in the Demons’ 11-0 win over the Eagles.  Christina Douglas was walked and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Dana Kenney.  Then, Bouck singled down the left field line and advanced Douglas to third.  Martz singled again, this time scoring both runners.  Behind her was Roberson who reached on a fielder’s choice but Martz was still able to advance due to a throwing error from the shortstop.  Jenny Doezie (1-for-1) then singled to load the bases for DePaul.  Katy Kukman (0-for-3) grounded out to the second baseman but there was enough time for Martz to cross home plate.

Southern Miss attempted to rally in the top of the fifth inning when Ashley Davis led off with a double to right field.  A walked batter after her put two on the bases but the Golden Eagles couldn’t advance after DePaul’s defense put three away on a fielder’s choice, a ground out, and a strike out.

Lindsay Chouinard picked up her 16th win of the season.  She pitched a two-hitter, striking out eight batters, and allowing no runs.

The Blue Demons play again at home on Tuesday in a double header against Illinois State, starting at 3 p.m.
