Blue Demons Pound Northern Illinois
CHICAGO -- The No. 22/21 DePaul softball team used 12 hits in its 10-2 victory over Northern Illinois on Thursday at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons (22-9) got a big boost at the plate from Lauren Frankiewicz and Amber Patton, who both went 3-for-3. Frankiewicz knocked a pair of doubles and a single for a team-high five RBI while all three of Patton’s hits were singles. Jackie Tarulli-Fisher had three RBI, while Marla Mathews added a pair. After Northern Illinois (11-23) jumped on board in the first inning with Kayla Kramer’s solo home run it was all DePaul. Kramer’s long ball proved to be the Huskies only hit of the ballgame. DePaul posted five runs in the both the first and second innings. Tarulli-Fisher, Mathews, Frankiewicz and Patton each had singles in the first frame. The second inning saw Frankiewicz knock a base clearing double to right center while Marie Thompson, Taurlli-Fisher and Patton all had singles in the frame. Northern Illinois capitalized on a wild pitch for its second run in the fourth inning. Becca Heteniak (13-6) struck out five and walked three in her complete game performance. NIU used a pair of pitchers while Morgan Bittner (6-11) suffered the loss. The pair combined for two strikeouts and two walks. The Blue Demons return to action on Saturday when they welcome USF for a key BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Cacciatore Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
