Blue Demons Complete Sweep of Villanova
CHICAGO No. 22/25 DePaul used a pair of home runs to push past Villanova, 6-2 Saturday in BIG EAST Conference softball action at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons complete the sweep of Villanova and improve to 26-12 and 5-3 in conference play, while the Wildcats fall to 14-16-1 and 3-7 in the league. Catcher Jackie Tarulli-Fisher and designated player Lauren Frankiewicz gave the Blue Demons an offensive burst with home runs in game two of the doubleheader. Tarulli-Fisher knock her fifth long ball of the season in the second inning; while Frankiewicz's first collegiate home run was a two-run shot over right field fence in the fifth inning. DePaul used its short game to get on the board in the first frame. Amber Patton led off game with a bunt single and came around to score on Sandy Vojik's sacrifice fly, two batters later. Following Tarulli-Fisher's solo shot in the second, Alex Morocco reached on a bunt single and two batters later would score. With runners on first and third, DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti called for the double steal and with Warren caught in a run down, Morocco would score the eventual game-winner. Villanova tallied its only runs of the day in the third frame. Danielle Maricle led off the inning with a home run and the Wildcat's final run would come on a sacrifice fly. The Blue Demons stretched their lead to 4-2 on Marie Thompson's two-out RBI single in the fourth. Frankiewicz's long ball gave DePaul its final two runs of the ballgame. Nicci Ward (5-5) threw 5.1 innings before being replaced by Kat Walsh. Ward gave up nine hits and four earned runs before Walsh entered the ballgame. Walsh faced just three batters. The game was stopped in the sixth inning after a 30 minute rain delay. Villanova had a runner on third, with no outs when the game was called. The Blue Demons welcome Rutgers for a league doubleheader on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
