Heteniak Throws DePaul Past ISU in Game Two

CHICAGO Becca Heteniak led the No. 20/20 DePaul softball team to a 5-2, game two win over Illinois State, Wednesday at Cacciatore Stadium.

Heteniak (16-6) went the distance in the circle as she struck out nine ISU batters and allowed just a pair of hits in her 19th complete game of the season. The junior helped her own cause as she went 2-for-3 at the plate, including solo home run to lead the Blue Demons offensively.

DePaul (27-9) jumped on the board in the first inning with two outs.  Jackie Tarulli-Fisher drew a walk and back-to-back singles by Heteniak and Katelyn Braget gave the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead heading into the second frame.

Following a lead off double by Abby Olson, ISU (18-20) used a pair of sacrifices to even the score at one.

The Blue Demons broke the ballgame open in the fourth with three runs.  Heteniak led off the frame with her 10th home run of the season. Braget followed and reached on an error at first while Marie Thompson drew a walk before Tara Voss ripped a two-RBI double right center to give DePaul a 4-1 advantage.

Tarulli-Fisher plated the Blue Demons’ final run with a RBI single up the middle in the fifth.

The Redbirds tried to rally in the sixth when Casey Gorrell knocked a RBI single with two outs, but Heteniak would get the final batter to strike out and end the ISU comeback attempt.

Jordan Birch (10-9) suffered the loss and threw four innings before being replaced by Megan Warner.  The Redbird duo struck out six, walked two and scattered five hits.

The Blue Demons swept the nonconference doubleheader as they picked up a 4-1 game one victory earlier in the afternoon.

DePaul returns to BIG EAST Conference play this weekend when it travels to Rutgers and Villanova for a pair of doubleheaders.  The Blue Demons tangle with Scarlet Knight on Saturday at 11.m., while Sunday’s doubleheader with the Wildcats begins at 10 a.m.
