DePaul Slams Charlotte, Chouinard Pitches Perfect Game
CHICAGO – The No. 8 Blue Demons swept Charlotte in a conference doubleheader on Friday at Wish Field. In game one, Lindsay Chouinard threw a perfect game, her first no-hitter of the season, to lead DePaul to a 6-0 win. The Blue Demons (33-4, 16-1 C-USA) took game two from the 49ers (15-1) after collecting 15 hits including a grand slam from Christina Douglas in the first inning, doubles from Saskia Roberson and Katy Kukman, and a triple from Sarah Martz.
Game One – Box Score
In game one, the Blue Demons left 11 on base but still managed to score six. The first two runs came in the fourth inning when a ground out from Dana Kenney sent in Jamie Lachenberg who pinch ran for Chouinard who had singled up the middle. Then a single to third base by Sarah Martz scored Douglas who had reached on a bunt.
DePaul scored four more runs off four hits and one error in the bottom of the sixth. Martz singled up the middle then Roberson walked and Laura Visin entered to pinch run. Jenny Doezie then singled down the right field line to score Martz and advance Visin to third. Catching the 49ers off-guard, Jenny Doezie stole second and Visin stole home simultaneously. Doezie was the next to score when Kukman singled. Then Douglas singled, and an error by Charlotte’s shortstop advanced her to second and allowed Kukman to score the sixth and final run of the game.
Chouinard threw an amazing game for the Demons. She pitched a perfect seven innings and notched her first no-hitter of the season. She struck out nine batters and walked no one. Chouinard’s record improves to 21-3.
Game Two – Box Score
Part two of the doubleheader was just as successful as the first for DePaul. In the bottom of the first, an error by Charlotte’s second baseman allowed Roberson to reach first and Liz Bouck, who bunted to get on, to score. With the bases loaded, Charlotte walked a run in to give the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead. All bases still covered with DePaul runners, Douglas stepped up to the plate and ripped a home run to left field. It was her sixth home run and the Demons’ first grand slam of the season.
The 49ers managed to score a run in the third inning on three hits. A single from Sam Moore sent in Denise Atmar who had singled to the shortstop.
But that did not intimidate the Blue Demons who scored six more runs that inning off of six hits and one Charlotte error.
DePaul scored three more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 15-1 with the help of Kukman who doubled, collecting two RBI, and then scored on a Chouinard ground out.
Martz, who batted 3-for-4 and hit a triple, also pitched the win. She struck out four batters and allowed just one earned run.
The Blue Demons play Charlotte again on Saturday for the final game of the series. Play begins at Noon at Wish Field.
