DePaul Tops Rutgers in Game One of BIG EAST Doubleheader

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The No. 20/20 DePaul softball team used nine hits in its 11-2, six innings, BIG EAST Conference victory over Rutgers in the first game of a league doubleheader at the RU Softball Complex on Saturday.

Becca Heteniak had a perfect 2-for-2 effort with one RBI, while Amber Patton improved her league-best average of .508 with a 3-for-4 day the Blue Demons (28-9 12-2 BIG EAST).

The Heteniak and Patton duo teamed-up in the first inning to put the Blue Demons on the board.  Patton led off the game with a bunt single and three batters later she came around to score on Heteniak’s single through the left side.

Sloppy fielding haunted both teams as there were six combined errors in the contest.  DePaul’s first error allowed Rutgers’ lead off Amanda Shaw to reach base and then come around to score on a sacrifice bunt in the first inning.

A pair of costly Scarlet Knight (16-26, 3-12 BIG EAST) errors allowed the Blue Demons to add a pair of runs in the second frame while a double steal in the third gave DePaul a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth.

The Blue Demons added two more runs in the fourth, before Rutgers posted its final run of the game on Sarah Kalka’s solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

DePaul pulled the game out of reach with five runs, four of which were unearned in the sixth.  Tara Voss, Jackie Tarulli-Fisher and Patton all had singles in the final frame.

Lauren Frankiewicz (6-1) threw her third complete game of the season to earn the victory.  She allowed just four hits, while she walked and struck out one.

Nicole Lindley (10-10) took the loss, while only four of DePaul’s 11 runs were earned.  She walked five and struck out a pair.

Rutgers and DePaul conclude their doubleheader this afternoon.
