Blue Demons Complete Doubleheader Sweep at Villanova
VILLANOVA, Pa. The No. 20/20 DePaul softball team picked up a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader sweep over Villanova with a 6-2, game two victory, Sunday at the VU Softball Field. The Blue Demons have won their last 10 and improve to 31-9 and 15-2 in league play, while Villanova falls to 20-20 and 4-15 in conference action.
DePaul posted runs in every inning except in the fifth and seventh frame. Amber Patton led the Blue Demons with a 3-for-4 effort, a pair RBI and scored two runs.
Patton started the Blue Demon scoring in the first, when she led off the game with a single and reached third on a two base error in center field. Lynsey Ciezki did her job and tied a DePaul single-season record with her 22nd sacrifice hit which plated Patton from third.
Villanova took its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom half of the first when Meghan Morese knocked a two-run home run to left field.
The Blue Demons got the run back immediately and plated the would-be game winner in the second on Patton’s two-RBI double to left center that gave DePaul a 3-2 lead.
Alex Morocco knocked a RBI single in the third while a Villanova fielding error in the fourth extended DePaul’s lead to 5-2.
Tara Voss plated the Blue Demons’ final run with a RBI bunt single in the sixth.
Becca Heteniak (18-6) earned the complete game win for the Blue Demons. She gave up five hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Molly Manning (5-2) took the loss. She was tagged for seven hits while she struck out four and walked six.
The Blue Demons host UIC on Tuesday, April 21, before hosting a pivotal BIG EAST doubleheader with Louisville on April 22.
