Blue Demons Dominate Villanova in Game One

VILLANOVA, Pa. The No. 20/20 DePaul softball team dominated Villanova 11-1 in the first game of a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at the VU Softball Field on Sunday. The win was the Blue Demons’ 30th of the season, while the team improves to 30-9 and 14-2 league play; the Wildcats fall to 20-19 and 4-14 in conference action.

Jackie Tarulli-Fisher and Simone Ashkar both homered in the lopsided victory.  Tarulli-Fisher’s two-run home run gave the Blue Demons their first runs of the ballgame in the third inning while Ashkar’s three-run bomb was the sophomore’s first collegiate home run.

Villanova posted its only run of the game in the fourth inning on Meghan Morese RBI double.

Fueled by Ashkar’s three-run home run, the Blue Demons registered six runs in the fifth. Alex Morocco led off the frame with a single while Katelyn Braget singled and Tarulli-Fisher drew a walk to load the bases for Becca Heteniak.  Heteniak reached on a fielder’s choice RBI, while Marie Thompson walked to put ducks on the pond for DePaul starter Lauren Frankiewicz

Frankiewicz pounded a single to right to plate a pair of runs and give the Blue Demons a 5-1 lead.  Ashkar’s home run followed and when the dust settled, DePaul took an 8-1 lead into the bottom half of the frame.

The Blue Demons produced their final three runs in the sixth.  Amber Patton and Lynsey Ciezki both singled, while Sean Plese was credited with two RBI in the final frame.

Frankiewicz (7-1) went the distance for the Blue Demons in the circle.  She struck out eight, while allowing just four hits and one walk.

The Wildcats used a pair of pitchers, while Caitlyn Delahaba (13-15) suffered the loss.  Delahaba threw 4.2 innings before being replaced by Megan Hord.  The duo struck out four, walked five and gave up eight hits.

DePaul and Villanova complete their doubleheader this afternoon.
