Louisville Tops DePaul in Game One
LOUISVILLE Louisville took game one of the BIG EAST Conference doubleheader 2-0, Sunday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 24-17 and 10-5 in league play, while the Blue Demons slip to 31-14.
Melissa Roth put the Cardinals on the board in the bottom of the third with her 18th double of the season. Roth’s two-out double scored Kaylyn Castillo who reached on the Cardinals first hit of the day, two batters earlier.
Louisville posted another run in the fourth inning. With one out, Kassie Stanfill took a six pitch walk and stole second base to move herself into scoring position for Castillo. Castillo singled up middle to give the U of L a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals continued to make contact as they loaded the bases in the fifth with one out. However, DePaul starter Becca Heteniak was able to strike out Colby Wherry and left fielder Stephanie Blagaich chased down Stanfill’s ball for the final out of the inning.
DePaul pinch hitter Annie Demas gave the Blue Demons life with two outs in the top of seventh when she doubled off the right center field fence. Marie Thompson blasted a grounder to Cardinal second baseman Christina Roesel, who misplayed the ball, but recovered to make the out and preserve the win.
Heteniak (17-6) suffered her first BIG EAST loss of her career and threw her 18th complete game of the season. She struck out five, walked one and gave up five hits.
Kristen Wadwell picked up the win and allowed four hits in her fifth shutout of the season. Wadwell (13-10) scattered four hits, struck out two and walked a pair.
The Blue Demons and Cardinals finish the second half of the doubleheader later this afternoon.
