Louisville Takes Game One
CHICAGO No. 17/18 Louisville used 11 hits in its 10-1, six inning BIG EAST Conference victory over No. 20/19 DePaul in game one of a doubleheader at Cacciatore Stadium. The Cardinals (41-6, 16-3) posted a combined eight runs in the fifth and sixth frame to end the game in the sixth inning. Colby Wherry led UofL with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBI. Patricka Barlow also recorded two hits and a pair of RBI in the win. Louisville jumped on the board in the first inning on Wherry’s RBI single and added its second run on Casey Stanfill’s double to right center in the third. Down 2-0, the Blue Demons (31-10, 15-3) got a run back in the bottom of the second on Amber Patton’s infield RBI single. Brittney Yniguez scored on Patton’s single while she reached base on DePaul’s only other hit of the game, a single to right field. The fourth inning played even before the Cards posted three runs in the fifth and added five in the sixth. Kristi Cunningham knocked a two-run home run to center and a RBI triple by Christina Roesel netted the Cards a 5-1 lead heading into the sixth. Louisville batted around the order in the sixth and used three hits to post its five runs. Kristen Wadwell (35-6) earned the complete game victory for the Cardinals. She scattered just two hits, while she struck out five and walk one. Lauren Frankiewicz (7-2) took the loss for DePaul. She gave up 11 hits, while only eight of Louisville's 10 runs were earned. She struck out eight and walked five in her complete game performance. The two teams are now tied for the top spot in the BIG EAST standings. Game two of the twinbill follows this afternoon.
