Heteniak Helps DePaul Sweep Connecticut
CHICAGO No. 23 DePaul completed a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader sweep of Connecticut with a 2-0, game-two victory Saturday at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons have won their last seven games and improve to 38-14 and 11-5 in conference play, while the Huskies fall to 25-19 and 11-5 in the league. After playing four and a half innings without a score, Becca Heteniak put the Blue Demons on the board with one swing of the bat. Heteniak’s fifth home run of the season scored Sandy Vojik, who singled to begin the bottom of the fourth. Connecticut put some pressure on the Blue Demons as the Huskies loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out. Micah Traux and Danielle Del Ponte both singled before Allie Gendron took a four-pitch walk. With the bases loaded Heteniak replaced DePaul starter Lauren Frankiewicz in the circle. Heteniak struck out her first batter and got Julianne Towers to ground out and end the Huskies threat. Heteniak picked up the save as she retired the Huskies in order in the top seventh to preserve the win for Frankiewicz. Frankiewicz (9-6) scattered four hits, walked three and struck out three in five and a third innings. Heteniak retired all five batters she faced and recorded a pair of strikeouts in her second save of the season. Rachael Crossin (9-10) suffered the loss for UConn. She scattered six hits, struck out five and walked a pair in her complete game performance. With the sweep the Blue Demons move into sole possession of second place in the conference standings. DePaul sits one game behind USF, after the Bulls (40-17, 14-4) were swept by Louisville today. The Blue Demons won game one, 4-1. DePaul returns to the diamond on Sunday, when it hosts Providence for a BIG EAST doubleheader in Lincoln Park. DePaul will celebrate Senior Day at the conclusion of the twinbill and will honor the accomplishments of Katie Hanson, Marcy Wilus and Vojik.
