Voss Honored as BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week
CHICAGO - The BIG EAST Conference has taken notice of DePaul's recent surge and honored two Blue Demon softball players on Monday.
Tara Voss became team's' first Player of the Week this season after the junior shortstop hit .636 in four games last week with home runs in the final three games.
She also had seven RBI and six runs with three multi-hit games and a slugging percentage of 1.545.
Ace Becca Heteniak (16-9) was named to the Honor Roll after going 2-0 while allowing just one run in 11 innings. She had 11 strikeouts and finished with an earned-run average of 0.63. The senior from California also hit two home runs last week.
DePaul (32-15, 16-3 in the BIG EAST Conference) has won 11 of its last 12 games.
DePaul coach Eugene Lenti thought Voss had been pressing lately while batting in the third spot. Moving her down to No. 7 worked wonders over the weekend.
In a three-game sweep of Georgetown, Voss hit those three home runs and drove in seven runs.
"I guess moving me down made me feel a little more relaxed," Voss said while acknowledging she still hopes to be moved up in the batting order. "Before, I had been pulling off the pitch and not taking it all the way in. Against Georgetown, I tried to see the ball more."
Voss is batting .331 on the season with a team-high eight home runs. Her 28 RBI is second to Brittney Yniguez with 29. Voss leads the Blue Demons in runs with 37 and is second in hits with 43.
Heteniak has won eight games in a row with her last loss coming back on March 28 at Louisville. She has an earned-run average of 1.90 on the season with 173 strikeouts in 150.2 innings. Opponents are hitting just .192 against her.
DePaul plays six games within six days this week, beginning with a 4 p.m. nonconference North Side matchup Tuesday at Loyola.
