Blue Demons Pound UAB



CHICAGO--Lindsay Chouinard tossed her third no-hitter of the season in the opener and the Blue Demons exploded for 20 runs and 23 hits in both games of the doubleheader sweep of UAB.  # 18 DePaul took the opener 12-0 in five innings and Sarah Martz (12-3) picked up the victory in the Demons’ 8-4 victory in game two.

The Blue Demons picked up five runs in the first off UAB starter Megan Stephenson (14-9) in the first game.  Liz Bouck got things started with a lead off double and Martz followed with a base hit to center field.  After Chirstina Douglas reached on a fielder’s choice loading the bases, April Valdez roped a single to center bringing home Bouck and Martz with the first runs of the game.  With one out, Gina Ramacci provided the Blue Demons with a 4-0 lead singling up the middle driving in Christina Douglas and Valdez.  DePaul added another run making it 5-0 after one inning.

After a scoreless second inning, the Blue Demons exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third blowing the game wide open.  Saskia Roberson delivered her team-leading sixth home run of the season over the bleachers in left field bringing home Valdez.  DePaul added three more runs when Sara Christophel dropped Martz’s fly ball allowing three runs to cross the plate.  Christina Douglas drove home Martz with an RBI single closing out the scoring in the third.

DePaul added one more in the fourth when Shavaughne Desecki, returning to action for the first time since an injury on April 9, laced a single to right field.  Roberson was thrown out at the plate, but Ramacci came around to score when the Blazers tried to catch Desecki off first base.

The 12 Blue Demon runs and the 14 hits were the second highest totals this season.  Ramacci led the attack with a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs and three runs scored while Valdez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Roberson finished 2-for-3 driving in two runs and scoring one.

Chouinard did not walk a batter and struck out seven.  She improves to 24-4 this season with 14 shutouts and 25 complete games.

In game two, the Blue Demons’ offense remained red-hot pumping out eight runs and nine hits on their way to the doubleheader sweep.

Again, DePaul opened the scoring with two runs in the first.  Martz walked with one out and came home when Christina Douglas drilled her sixth home run of the season over the center field wall. 

In the second inning, Sarah Douglas got into the long ball act connecting for her fifth home run of the season.  The home run brought home Ramacci who doubled leading off the inning.

After UAB picked up two in the top half of the third inning, Valdez picked up her third RBI of the day in the bottom half of the inning tripling home Christina Douglas making it 5-2.

The Blue Demons added three more in the fourth inning making it 8-2.  Katy Kukman crushed a two-run homer to left field, her fourth of the season, bringing home Sarah Douglas.  Bouck and Martz executed a double steal, Bouck scored, giving DePaul its final run of the game.

UAB picked up two runs in the fifth inning, but Chouinard shut the door the last two innings in relief of Martz.  Chouinard moves her streak to 67 1/3 innings pitched without allowing an earned run and lowered her ERA to 0.47, ranked third in the NCAA.  Martz went five innings allowing two earned runs and striking out five Blazers.

Sarah Douglas finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Kukman went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored.  Christina Douglas scored two runs and drove in two with a 1-for-2 performance.

The Conference USA leading Blue Demons move their conference record to 19-1 and overall mark to 42-9.  The second place Blazers drop to 14-9 in conference and 36-19 overall. 

Tomorrow, the teams wrap up the series at noon on Senior Day at Wish Field.  Seniors Molly Sircher and Shavaughne Desecki will be honored before the game.
