Tarulli-Fisher Leads DePaul Past Pittsburgh in Game One

PITTSBURGH Jackie Tarulli-Fisher homered and doubled in No. 23 DePaul’s 4-1, BIG EAST Conference win over Pittsburgh, Sunday at Trees Field.  The Blue Demons have won their last eight league game and improve to 45-15 and 16-5 in conference play.  Pittsburgh falls to 30-24 and 11-10 in league action.

Amber Patton made Pittsburgh starter Cory Berliner pay for a lead off walk as she came around to score on Sandy Vojik’s sacrifice, suicide squeeze with one out in the first inning.  Becca Heteniak reached on an error at shortstop and came around to score on Jackie Tarulli-Fisher’s double to right center.

With a 2-0 advantage after the first inning, Alex Morocco and Sean Plese led off the second with a pair of singles to place ducks on the pond for the top of the order.  Amber Patton knocked the Blue Demons third single of the inning to score Morocco from third.  DePaul would leave the bases loaded as the next three batters would groundout and end the Blue Demon’s scoring opportunity.

The Blue Demons extended their lead to four runs on Tarulli-Fisher’s solo home run to begin the third frame. Tarulli-Fisher’s long ball was her eighth of the season.

Pittsburgh recorded its only run in the bottom of the fourth when Mary Hecker knocked RBI double to left center.  Hecker’s hit scored Ashley Amistade, who singled to begin the frame.

Heteniak (28-6) picked up the win in circle for the Blue Demons.  The sophomore All-American struck out 10, walked a pair and scattered four hits.  With 254 strikeouts this season, Heteniak is three away from tying DePaul’s all-time season strikeout record.  She averages 8.3 strikeouts per seven innings, the most in the BIG EAST.

Berliner (16-12) suffered the complete game loss. She scattered nine hits, struck out one and walked three.

Along with Tarulli-Fisher, Vojik finished the game with a pair of hits.

The Blue Demons and Panthers finish their doubleheader later today.
