Softball Stumbles In Final Home Game
CHICAGO- Senior Christina Douglas made her final appearance at Wish Field memorable as she went 3-4 at the plate. However, it was not enough as the DePaul University softball team dropped its final, home game of the 2004 season, 4-1, to UAB on Sunday afternoon.
DePaul, out hit UAB 10 to nine, but were unable to overcome the two-run home run hit by UAB’s Beth Mullins in the third inning. The Blazers posted its first two runs, in the second inning.
The Blue Demons posted its only run in the bottom of the sixth. Christina Douglas crossed the plate on Jenny Doezie’s single to right field. DePaul had chances to score in first, second and seventh innings, but left 10 runners stranded on base.
Senior Sarah Martz was in the circle for her final appearance at Wish Field and struck out five batters. On the mound, she finishes with a career record of 72-24 and with her name engraved in all six of DePaul’s career records. Offensively, Martz graduates holding the DePaul record for most hits in a career with 296 and most at bats with 763 plate appearances.
Fellow seniors, Christina and Sarah Douglas, finished out the season and their careers strong. Christina Douglas amassed 155 hits, 97 RBI and 24 home runs during her career, while her twin added 105 RBI on 149 hits.
The Blue Demons will head to Louisville, next week as the fourth seed in the Conference USA Tournament. They will face Houston in the opening game on Thursday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. Tickets for the C-USA Tournament can be obtained by calling the Louisville ticket office at 502-852-5151. DePaul won the conference tournament in 2002 and 2003.
