CHICAGO - The DePaul softball team is traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for regional play in the NCAA Championship. The Blue Demons face #13 Arkansas in game two at 4 p.m. CT at Bogle Park after earning an automatic bid by winning its fourth BIG EAST Tournament title on Saturday.
Joining DePaul and Arkansas in Fayetteville are Wichita State and Oklahoma State. The Shockers and Cowboys open play on Friday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU followed by the Blue Demons and Razorback at 4 p.m. CT.The DePaul-Arkansas game can be seen on the SEC Network.
At each regional, a four-team, double-elimination tournament will be conducted. The 16 winning teams advance to a best-of-three Super Regionals. The eight winners of those series travel to Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series.
The 2018 appearance is the 20th in program history for DePaul as the Blue Demons hold a 45-39 record all-time in NCAA Championship play. DePaul is making back-to-back appearances in the NCAA tournament as the Blue Demons competed in the Lexington Regional in 2017.The program holds four all-time appearances in the Women's College World Series, the last being in 2007.
DePaul claimed one of the 32 automatic bids by defeating Creighton in dominate fashion on Saturday in the BIG EAST title game. The 64-team field also features 32 at-large bids.
The host, Arkansas, enters the matchup with DePaul carrying a 39-15 record after falling to then-ranked #12 South Carolina in the semifinals of the SEC tournament.The Razorbacks went 12-12 in conference play, turning in an RPI ranking of #19.DePaul is 1-0 all-time against the Razorbacks, winning the only meeting in 1998 with a 6-2 tally.
Wichita State comes into the Fayetteville Regional with a 30-21 mark, having fallen to sixth-seeded Tulsa in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference championship tournament.WSU carries the #32 RPI rating and has picked up three wins against Top 25 opponents in 2018.The Shockers own the only other meeting with the Blue Demons, defeating DePaul in a close 6-5 result in 1993.
Oklahoma State finished with a 38-20 record prior to regional play after winning two out of its three games at the BIG 12 tournament while going 12-6 in conference play during the regular season. OSU has the #26 spot in the latest RPI rankings.The Cowgirls lead the all-time battle with DePaul 5-1, winning the last four meetings against the Blue Demons.OSU and DePaul last met in 2016 where the Cowgirls pulled out a 7-2 victory.
Wichita State is the only team to have faced multiple opponents from the Fayetteville Regional during the regular season.The Shockers are 3-0 against regional foes, downing Arkansas 1-0 while taking two victories against Oklahoma State with 5-3 and 9-6 wins.
This weekend's regional winner advances to the Super Regional to face the winner of the Norman Regional that features the host #4 Oklahoma along with Boston U, Tulsa, and Missouri.
