Blue Demons Will Face Wisconsin at NCAA Regional

CHICAGO – The DePaul softball team will face Wisconsin in the opening round of the NCAA Region Eight bracket on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Goodman Diamond in Madison, Wisconsin the NCAA announced Sunday night.

 

DePaul (40-19) received Conference USA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the conference tournament championship May 14, in Tampa.  The Blue Demons defeated Louisville 6-2, in the championship game.  Sophomore pitcher Megan Huitink was named the tournament MVP after appearing in all three games, giving up just 8 hits and struck out 12 batters.

 

DePaul and host Wisconsin will be joined by Oregon State and Wisconsin-Green Bay in Madison.

 

This is the ninth consecutive year and the 11th time in the past 12 seasons that DePaul will appear in the NCAA Regionals. The Blue Demons have also made two trips to the College World Series in 1999 and 2000.

 

The Division I championship provides for a field of 64 teams. The championship will be extended to three weekends of competition for the first time this year. Four teams will participate at each of 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament.

 

The regional winners will advance to super regional competition for a best-of-three series May 27-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at eight campus sites.

 

The remaining eight teams will advance to the WCWS, an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The championship final will best-of-three-series for the first time this year. The WCWS will be conducted June 2-8 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
