Verdun, Connolly Earn All-Region First Team Honors
May 17, 2013
CHICAGO - Kirsten Verdun and Mary Connolly made quite an impression on opposing coaches as the DePaul softball standouts were chosen for the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Great Lakes Region First Team.
This was the third consecutive year that Verdun, a junior pitcher-first baseman, has been selected All-Region First Team by the votes of opposing coaches.
For the sophomore Connolly, who made the team as a designated player/utility player, this was her first time. Coaches are not allowed for vote for their own players in the NFCA balloting.
"It's a great honor for both of them," said DePaul coach Eugene Lenti. "It's the result of all the hard work and effort they put forward throughout the course of the year.
"This demonstrates Kirsten's consistency as she has earned this award three times in a row. And, Mary was very deserving of this recognition after her outstanding performance this season."
Verdun was 23-13 in the pitching circle with a 1.90 earned-run average and 253 strikeouts in 239.1 innings. She had a stretch late in the season when the left-hander threw four-straight shutouts.
In the batter's box, Verdun hit .371 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs.
Connolly had a break-out season, leading the team in home runs with 10, RBIs with 41 and total bases with 95 while batting .331.
Both become eligible for the NFCA All-American Team that will be announced on May 29. Verdun earned All-American Second Team honors last year.
