Breathtaking Visit to Vatican City and Sistine Chapel
June 22, 2017

ROME – The final day in Italy saw the Blue Demon softball team rendered speechless by the enormous beauty of the Sistine Chapel featuring the awesome Michelangelo works of art.

Their visit to the famed Vatican City and St. Peter’s Cathedral was highlighted by a chance encounter with the King and Queen of Holland who were visiting Pope Francis.

Here’s the journal from junior Morgan Greenwood and freshman Pearl Barroso.

Ciao from Morgan and Pearl.

Our 90-degree day began with a trip to the Vatican City where we found out that the Vatican City is actually the smallest country in the world!

We were amazed at how much history was inside the walls of Vatican City. We were able to see the dome of the St. Peter's Cathedral, the largest in the world, and St. Peter’s dome is the third largest in the world.

The first place we visited inside the walls was the Vatican Museum. The beauty of all the art in the museum was indescribable. We were stunned with how much art was there including sculptures, hand woven tapestries, mosaics, amazing paintings, and beautiful maps.

The next place we visited in the Vatican City was the Sistine Chapel. Everything on the walls was painted by Michelangelo. When we walked into the Chapel, we were left speechless. It was astonishing to see all the breathtaking paintings on the wall that was created by one man.

After we rejoined the rest of the group, we went into St. Peter's Cathedral. There were mosaics that covered all the walls. There were sculptures of different popes.

There are not enough words to describe how beautiful everything is, and we really could feel a spiritual presence. When we left the Cathedral, we saw the King and Queen of Holland leaving after visiting Pope Francis, or as they call him “Papa Francisco.”

After a long walk, we reached the Spanish Steps which were stunning to see with all the white marble. We bought some Gelato and took in the sites.

We had our last dinner as a team overseas tonight, and it was great for all of us to reflect on what we experienced on this trip and to express our thanks to everyone who made this unforgettable time in our lives possible.

We will forever be grateful for this opportunity.
