Softball Signs Three for 2008-09
CHICAGO - DePaul head softball coach Eugene Lenti announced the addition of three players to the Blue Demon squad for the 2008-09 season. Illinois natives, Katelyn Braget and Lynsey Ciezki, as well as Marla Matthews from California all signed a National Letter of Intent.
"This class gives us the depth that we need," Lenti said of his recruiting class. "By signing one outfielder, a middle infielder and one catcher it solidifies the team and makes us stronger.
Braget, an outfielder from Homer Glen, Illinois was named to the All-Area team by The Star Newspaper. A Lockport High School standout, Braget was also a member of the Chicago Bandits summer team, along with fellow signee Ciezki.
"Katelyn is a solid addition. She is a solid corner outfielder with above average speed and exceptional power for her size," Lenti said.
A lead off hitter the last three seasons, Ciezki led the Lake Park High School team in batting average, hits, and runs. Her offensive talent is equally matched by her defensive tenacity as the Chicago Tribune named her the most valuable field position player in the Upstate Eight Conference.
"Lynsey has great range, feet and hands," Lenti said of his middle infielder. "As a lefty slapper she also handles the bat really well."
Matthews follows her former So Cal Puma Travel teammates sophomore All-American Becca Heteniak and freshman Lindsey Dean to DePaul. As a catcher Matthews brings an enormous amount of talent and leadership behind the plate, and previously caught for Heteniak and Dean. Matthews led her Thousand Oaks High School to a Marmonte League Championship while also being named to the league’s first team.
"Marla is a four tool player she hits with power and can catch and throw with the best players in the country," Lenti said. "Marla is an exceptional player who could push for playing time as a freshman.
The Blue Demons begin the 2008 season at Georgia’s Black and Red Showcase Feb. 8-10. DePaul faces Marshall, Georgia and the College of Charleston during the three-day tournament in Athens, Georgia. DePaul throws the first pitch of the 2008 on Feb. 8 versus Marshall at 11 a.m. (CST)
