CHICAGO – DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti announced the softball team’s 2018 schedule on Tuesday. The Blue Demons, who are scheduled to face 34 opponents in the upcoming season including all seven of its BIG EAST programs, will look to defend their BIG EAST title in 2018.
DePaul faces six teams that participated in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including the back-to-back defending NCAA Division I National Champion Oklahoma. The Blue Demons will also battle five squads who competed in the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) tournament.
The Royal Blue and Scarlet will compete in 51 games starting with its season opener on Feb. 9 against IUPUI to open the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. Twenty-six of the Blue Demons’ ballgames will be in tournament play. Of the remaining 25 games, DePaul will host eight teams over 16 games at Cacciatore Stadium.
Coach Lenti will lead the Blue Demons into six different tournament environments to kick off 2018. First, the Blue Demons will remain close to home as they battle Wright State, Eastern Kentucky, Northern Colorado, and IUPUI at the Total Control Invitational at the Dome in Rosemont Feb. 9-11. Next, the sluggers will head south to battle College of Charleston, Longwood, Iona, Northern Illinois, and Presbyterian at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., Feb. 15-17.
The Blue Demons will then face Sam Houston State and host, UT Arlington, at the UTA Maverick Tournament in Arlington, Texas, Feb. 23-25 before heading to Atlanta, Ga., March 2-4 to square off against Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, and Georgia State in the I-75 Challenge.
DePaul will finish off tournament play with back-to-back west coast road trips where the Blue Demons will compete at the Rebel Classic (Las Vegas, Nev.) March 8-10 and Easton Tournament (Fullerton, Calif.) March 16-18. During this stretch, the Blue Demons will face four defending conference champions and NCAA tournament qualifiers. At the Rebel Classic, DePaul meets defending WAC champion New Mexico State, Portland State, UNLV, and 2017 College World Series participant Washington. The Easton Tournament kicks off with a head-to-head meeting with two-time defending national champion Oklahoma before the Blue Demons meet Grand Canyon, Cal State Northridge, Nebraska, and defending Big West Conference champion Cal State Fullerton.
Conference play begins in South Orange, N.J., with a three-game set against Seton Hall March 24-25. The Blue Demons will then return to Chicago to open their home slate at Cacciatore Stadium. DePaul begins an eight-game home stand against BIG EAST foe Villanova March 30-31 before opening April against Loyola Chicago in the Red Line Rivalry on the 3rd.
DePaul hosts Georgetown in a three-game conference series April 7-8 before wrapping up the first of two its home stands of the season against in-state rival Illinois State on April 9.
Briefly, the Blue Demons will leave the friendly confines of Cacciatore Stadium for a trifecta against Creighton April 14-15 before returning to begin their final home stretch of the season.
The final eight home games of the regular season will feature UIC (April 18), a meeting with 2017 BIG EAST runner-up St. John’s (April 21-22), Senior Day festivities against Butler (April 28-29), and a Purple Line Rivalry battle with Northwestern (May 2).
Lenti and crew will wrap up the regular season on the road against Providence with a three-game set May 5-6.
The BIG EAST Conference Tournament returns to the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill., May 11-12. The top four teams from league play qualify and will compete for the conference title that earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The College World Series will once again take place in Oklahoma City May 31-June 6, 2018.
