EVANSTON, Ill. - The DePaul women's tennis team added five wins for a two-day total of 10 victories at the Northwestern Invitational at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday. Rebeca Mitrea, Jasmin Kling and Patricia Fargas all won their respective singles matches.
The day started like Friday with doubles in the morning. Facing teams from No. 12 Northwestern, No. 65 LSU and UIC, the Blue Demons registered two wins. The Blue Demon pair of Gia McKnight and Kling dominated the Northwestern duo of Brittany Wowchuk and Nida Hamilton and collected an 8-1 victory. Cali Gustafson and Mitrea won their back-and-forth match 9-8 (4) to round out DePaul's doubles wins.
In singles action, it was the freshmen who came up big. Kling overpowered UIC's Polina Guimaraes in straight-sets - 6-2, 6-2. Fargas and Kling followed suit with straight-sets victories of their own over their respective UIC opponents. Fargas topped Jana Knoppe 6-1, 6-1 and Mitrea won her match 6-3, 6-1 over Kathryn Sharples.
The Blue Demons finish the Northwestern Invitational on Sunday. DePaul opens the dual portion of its schedule on Jan. 20 when it hosts No. 15 Vanderbilt at the Combe Indoor Center.
