Fargas, Lawson Lead Blue Demons On Day One In Evanston
Jan. 17, 2014
Each Blue Demon competed against a representative from Alabama's 12th-ranked squad.
Fargas topped Mary Anne Daines in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (5), to pace the Blue Demons in the Purple Flight and earn eight points (the player with the most total points at the end of the weekend will be the Classic's individual champion). For Fargas, it improved her overall singles record this season to 9-5.
Meanwhile, Lawson defeated Erin Routliffe, who came into the tournament ranked No. 68 in the country, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5). The victory marked Lawson's sixth of the year.
Lawson's win in the Red Flight allowed her to pick up five points in the tournament.
In doubles play, DePaul fell in three well-played matches, including a 6-3 match played by Sufi and Mitrea against Alabama's No. 59 duo of Routliffe and Danielle Spielmann.
"It was a pretty solid start," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "To come back from break and have to play against a top-15 program is really great. I'm really excited that Patricia beat a great player and that Kelsey was able to beat a top-70 player. But we need to keep improving our doubles and just be a lot more consistent in order to hang with a top-tier SEC program."
The Northwestern Winter Classic continues tomorrow in Evanston.
