Jan. 25, 2014
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Three singles victories and a pair of doubles wins propelled the DePaul women's tennis team to a 4-1 victory over San Jose State on Saturday afternoon at the ITA Kick-Off in College Station, Texas.
For DePaul (1-0), the win marked its first of the year. San Jose State, which came into the match ranked No. 68 in the country, fell to 2-2.
In doubles play, Rebeca Mitrea teammed with Zaina Sufi to take down Julianna Bacelar and Justine Deleval, 6-2, in the No. 3 match before Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu secured the doubles point for the Blue Demons with a 6-1 triumph over Gaelle Ray and Jessica Willett in the No. 2 match.
"I was really proud of the effort from the girls today," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "Having a tough day of travel and not being able to hit outside wasn't easy. All three doubles teams got us off to a great start and really set the tone early."
In singles play, Sufi topped Willett, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 match to give DePaul a 2-0 lead in the match and then Lawson defeated Bacelar (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 4 contest to put the Blue Demons ahead, 3-0. Then, with DePaul ahead 3-1, Mitrea finished off San Jose State's Deleval in the No. 6 match in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (3)) to give the Blue Demons the 4-1 win. The No. 1 and No. 3 matches were left unfinished.
"The bottom of the lineup doesn't get a lot of credit but they did a great job today," Ardizzone said. "We beat a good team today. It is great to advance to the second round of this prestigious event."
DePaul will play Texas A&M in the second round of the ITA Kick-Off tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. It is the Blue Demons' first appearance in the Round of 32 at the Kick-Off.
