Feb. 1, 2014
CHICAGO -- For the second time in as many days, the DePaul women's tennis team came away with a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent.
This time, the No. 74 Blue Demons downed No. 65 Louisville, 6-1. The victory came just one day after a 4-0 triumph over No. 25 TCU.
DePaul improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Cardinals dropped to 1-2.
"It was a great all-around effort," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "We defeated a very good Louisville team. We started off well in the doubles matches and took that energy to singles play."
Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu kicked off the afternoon with a 6-3 win over Manuela Velasquez and Rebecca Shine in the No. 1 doubles match. The, Rebeca Mitrea and Zaina Sufi topped Cassie Pough and Elle Stokes, 6-3, in the No. 3 match to give DePaul the early 1-0 match advantage.
In singles competition, Jasmin Kling handled Velasquez (6-1, 6-1) in the No. 4 match to give DePaul a 2-0 lead and Kelsey Lawson made it 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Stokes in the No. 3 position. For Lawson, it was her fifth consecutive singles win. Then, Fargas sealed the match for the Blue Demons with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 victory over Julia Fellerhoff.
DePaul tacked on two more singles wins courtesy of Mitrea and Sufi to cap the seven-win day and five-point team victory. Mitrea beat Pough in the No. 6 match (6-3, 6-4) and Sufi earned her third-straight win courtesy of a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 triumph over Rebecca Bodine in the No. 5 slot.
"We still have another match against UIC tomorrow so it is important to take this time to recover and play strong the last day of the weekend," Ardizzone said.
The Blue Demons are off to their best start since the 2011-12 season, when they began the year 8-1.
DePaul will take its 3-1 record into tomorrow's home match against UIC. Match time from Chicago is scheduled for 1 p.m.
