Blue Demons Rally Past Oregon For Fourth Consecutive Win
Feb. 8, 2014
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- After dropping the doubles point to No. 72 Oregon, the 74th-ranked DePaul women's tennis team rallied back in singles play to secure a 4-3 victory and improve to 5-1 overall.
For the Blue Demons, their win over the Ducks (4-2) moves them to 4-1 against ranked opponents this season. It is also their fourth consecutive victory in dual play.
"We were fortunate to sneak one out today," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "Hats off to Oregon for really taking it to us in doubles. I am happy with how we responded, finding a way to get four points."
Oregon took a 1-0 lead after winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches but Zaina Sufi and Rebeca Mitrea pulled DePaul back into the match with wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively. Sufi defeated Lana Buttner in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 1-0) and Mitrea topped Rabea Stueckemann in two (6-2, 6-4).
After Ana Vladutu fell in the No. 2 match, the Ducks and Blue Demons were tied, 2-2, with three matches left to be completed. Then, Jasmin Kling topped Sofia Hager, 7-6, 6-1, in the No. 4 match before Kelsey Lawson continued her perfect spring with a 7-5, 7-6 (1) triumph over Marlou Kluiving in the No. 3 match to secure the Blue Demon victory.
DePaul wraps up its two-match trip in Iowa City with an 11 a.m. match against the University of Iowa.
"We have to focus on better starts and to keep getting better every match," Ardizzone said. "We have a great test tomorrow against a lot of great competitors from Iowa."
The Blue Demons are searching for their first five-match winning streak since rattling off nine consecutive matches from Feb. 1 to Feb. 23 last season.
