MILWAUKEE – The No. 38 DePaul women’s tennis team defeated Rutgers 6-1 on Saturday in BIG EAST Conference play at Marquette’s Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Playing its first BIG EAST dual of the season, the Blue Demons jumped on the Scarlet Knights in doubles and continued its tough play in singles.
The Blue Demons (10-3) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage with wins on the second and third doubles courts. Kelsey Lawson and Patricia Fargas dominated Stefania Balasa and Noor Judeh and were the first off the courts with their impressive 8-1 victory.
Rutgers (5-4) took the top doubles match before DePaul’s Gia McKnight and Cali Gustafson topped Lindsay Balsamo and Morgan Ivey 8-5. The Blue Demon win on the third court, clinched the doubles point for the Blue Demons.
The Blue Demons secured the win early with three two-set victories. Neumann topped Judeh 6-3, 6-3 on the fifth court. Cali Gustafson matched Neumann’s score on the sixth court which put the Blue Demons up 3-0.
McKnight registered her 85th career singles victory when she topped Ivey 6-2, 6-3. McKnight’s win clinched the dual for the Blue Demons.
DePaul returns to the courts on Sunday at Iowa. The first serve is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
