April 6, 2013
ORLANDO, Fla - DePaul women's tennis played the spoiler against No. 64 UCF on Saturday at the UCF Tennis Complex, sending the Knights to their first home loss of the season with a resounding 6-1 win.
It was the second straight triumph for the Blue Demons as the team improved to 11-7 overall and got its second win over a ranked opponent this season. By starting the match with two doubles wins, DePaul also remained undefeated (10-0) when taking the doubles point.
The freshman combination of Matea Cutura and Ana Vladutu began the match with an 8-2 win over UCF's Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson. Sophomores Patricia Fargas and Jasmin Kling then clinched the pairs point with a tight 9-7 decision against Caroline Eberhart and Courtney Griffith.
DePaul continued its strong play in singles, picking up three straight-set wins and two more in dramatic tie-breakers.
At the three, Fargas picked up her 16th win of the year with a 6-0, 6-2 dispatching of Haraldson. Junior captain Kelsey Lawson also breezed past Eberhart playing at fourth singles in a 6-1, 6-1 match.
Freshman Zaina Sufi was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at the six, but things would get tougher for the Blue Demons after building a 4-1 lead. Nevertheless, Vladutu and freshman Jarret Fisher worked their way through difficult matches to both claim tie-breaker wins.
At the two spot, Vladutu responded after a first set defeat to come back against Jenna Doerfler in a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) contest. Fisher, playing at the five, took an early lead and fought back from a set two loss to win by the same score in the tiebreak, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
DePaul is back on the court tomorrow, Sunday, April 7 against BIG EAST opponent South Florida in Tampa Bay, Fla. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. CT.
