April 7, 2013
TAMPA BAY, Fla. - DePaul women's tennis couldn't make it back-to-back weekend wins against ranked opponents, dropping a 5-2 decision on Sunday to No. 57 South Florida at the USF Varsity Courts.
DePaul drops to 11-8 overall and 1-3 against BIG EAST competition, while South Florida moved to 6-0 in the conference and 12-6 overall. The Blue Demons also fell to 2-5 against ITA-ranked teams this season.
South Florida got on the board first, securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three before jumping ahead 3-0 in the match with two more victories at first and sixth singles.
Freshman Jarret Fisher gave the Blue Demons their first point from the five spot, taking down Paula Montoya in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) and completing a 2-0 weekend in singles play.
The Bulls clinched the match at third singles, however, before DePaul wrestled another point away at the two, where sophomore Patricia Fargas won in a tie-breaker, 6-4, 2-6 (10-5) against Loreto Alonso-Martinez. USF then grabbed its fifth and final point at fourth singles.
DePaul will be back in action next weekend, again hitting the road as the team faces BIG EAST opponents in Cincinnati and Louisville. The Bearcats will be up first on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
