April 19, 2014
CHICAGO -- The DePaul women's tennis team wrapped up its 2014 regular season with a dominating 7-0 victory over BIG EAST rival Marquette on Saturday afternoon in Chicago.
The Blue Demons finish the regular season at 19-3 overall and 4-0 against BIG EAST opponents, while Marquette drops to 12-9 and 2-1 against BIG EAST teams with the loss.
"It was a great way to close out the regular season," head coach Mark Ardizzone said. "Marquette competes so hard and is well-coached so you really need to bring your best effort when you play them."
The 40th-ranked Blue Demons won all nine matches that were played in the contest, going 3-0 in doubles play and 6-0 in singles matches. DePaul's top duo of Ana Vladutu and Patricia Fargas took care of business in the No. 1 doubles match, blanking Ali Dawson and Laia Hernandez, 8-0. Then, in the No. 2 match, Jasmin Kling and Kelsey Lawson defeated Erin Gebes and Rocio Diaz, 8-2, before Zaina Sufi and Rebeca Mitrea won the No. 3 match, 8-5, over Ana Pimienta and Aina Hernandez.
Carolin Neumann opened up singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Laia Hernandez in the No. 6 match before Sufi defeated Vanessa Foltinger at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
"I was really proud of Carolin for coming off the bench and winning a big first point for us in singles," Ardizzone said. "It really pumped up the team seeing all her hard work in coming back pay off."
With the Blue Demons leading 3-0, Fargas clinched the match at No. 1 singles by beating Pimienta, 6-1, 7-6.
The final three singles matches of the day featured a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 win by Kling over Gebes in the No. 2 match, a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory by Mitrea over Aina Hernandez (No. 5) and a win in the No. 3 match by Lawson, who beat Dawson in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-3.
For Lawson, the win was her 102nd career singles victory. She is 102-50 overall and tied for second with Klara Salopek on DePaul's career singles wins list.
In a regular season that featured a 16-match winning streak, the Blue Demons go into postseason play on a two-match win streak. The team will be the No. 1 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament in Flushing, N.Y. Action begins on April 24.
"Now it's all about getting four wins in the postseason," Ardizzone said. "We are ready and looking forward to the challenge."
