April 21, 2013
TAMPA, Fla. - DePaul women's tennis took down third-seeded Louisville, 4-1, on Sunday to claim third-place at the BIG EAST Tournament at the USF Varsity Courts.
After sharing third with the Cardinals last year due to inclement weather, the Blue Demons (15-10) took care of business with three singles wins from the bottom three spots in the order as well as the doubles point. The win also avenged a late-season 4-3 road loss to Louisville.
Early in the match, the Blue Demons cruised in two doubles matches as sophomores Patricia Fargas and Jasmin Kling were 8-4 winners at the two spot. Junior Kelsey Lawson and freshman Jarret Fisher added an 8-2 win at third doubles.
In singles play, Louisville bounced back to take a point at second singles and even the match before the Blue Demons ran off three straight wins from the bottom of the order to seal the win.
At the five, Fisher improved to 4-0 at the tournament with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Mandy Brown.
Lawson closed out her opponent next at fourth singles, moving to 3-0 at the tournament with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Stefanie Villajuan.
Just under three hours after the match began, freshman Zaina Sufi then clinched the win at sixth singles with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Becky Bodine.
DePaul finished play at the BIG EAST Tournament with a 3-1 record as strong singles play led to a fifth straight trip to the semi-finals and near upset of top-seeded Notre Dame on Saturday.
