NEW YORK -- The No. 1-seeded DePaul women's tennis team had no trouble in Friday morning's BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals, handling No. 9 seed Villanova, 4-0, to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

The Blue Demons, who came into the tournament ranked No. 46 nationally, improved to 20-3 with the win, while the loss ended the Wildcats' season at 6-17.

The victory also pushes the Blue Demons to within two wins of a BIG EAST title and their first berth in the NCAA Tournament since 2010.

They will take on either No. 4 St. John's, which beat No. 5 Georgetown today, 4-3, in tomorrow morning's semifinals. Match time is scheduled for 10 a.m. (CST).

"It was nice to get our first win," head coach Mark Ardizzone said. "I thought we had some jitters early but we fought through them."

DePaul swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 edge in the match. In the No. 1 slot, Ana Vladutu and Patricia Fargas defeated Mikelle Mancini and Tori Smyth, 8-2, before Jasmin Kling and Kelsey Lawson closed out the doubles point with an 8-1 triumph over Linley Busby and Kate Pettee. Zaina Sufi and Rebeca Mitrea won, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Mitrea gave the Blue Demons a 2-0 advantage thanks to a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Connor Brewer in the No. 6 match. Then, Kling beat Samantha Schafer, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles before Fargas clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Smyth.

"Patricia and Jasmin really played well and dominated in singles and doubles. We will need to be ready for a tough test tomorrow," Ardizzone said.

Vladutu (No. 1), Kelsey Lawson (No. 4) and Sufi (No. 5) were each up one set in their matches when the contest concluded.

Second-seeded Marquette won the other early-morning quarterfinal match, beating No. 10 Butler, 5-0. Then, No. 3 Xavier beat No. 6 Seton Hall before the Red Storm topped the Hoyas.

The Blue Demons have now advanced to the BIG EAST semifinals six consecutive seasons. Video highlights of today's match will be available later today on the BIG EAST All-Access and YouTube pages.
