DePaul Beats Xavier, Wins BIG EAST Title

NEW YORK -- For the first time since 2010, the DePaul women's tennis team will compete in the NCAA Tournament.
The top-seeded Blue Demons earned an automatic bid to the NCAAs by beating No. 3 Xavier, 4-0, to win the 2014 BIG EAST Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon in Flushing, Queens (N.Y.).
For the Blue Demons (22-3) the win marked their 22nd overall and fifth in a row. They went a combined 7-0 against BIG EAST opponents in regular season and postseason play this year.
Xavier, meanwhile, ends its season at 19-6.
DePaul hopped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches. Ana Vladutu and Patricia Fargas (No. 1) knocked off Alexandra Brinker and Sydney Liggins, 8-1, before Zaina Sufi and Rebeca Mitrea sealed the coveted doubles point with an 8-3 triumph over Ally Westling and Andrea Wolf in the No. 3 match.
In singles play, Mitrea won her 21st dual match of the season to give DePaul a 2-0 edge in the match. She defeated Lizzie Oosterbaan, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6 singles. Then, Fargas brought her team within one point of the championship by defeating Brinker, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 2 singles match.
With the Blue Demons up 3-0, Zaina Sufi clinched the BIG EAST Championship for DePaul in the No. 5 singles match. She beat Wolf in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, to give DePaul the title.
For Sufi, the win was her 19th dual singles victory of the year, second to only Mitrea.
In DePaul's last trip to the NCAA Tournament, the team fell to Ohio State, 4-1, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The 2014 NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced in the coming days. First and second round action will be played on May 9-10 at host sites around the country. Third round, quarterfinal, semifinal and championship matches will be played May 15-20 in Athens, Ga.
