Blue Demons Wrap Up Day One at the Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The DePaul women's tennis team racked up five singles victories on Friday at the Michigan Invitational.
The Blue Demons began the morning with seven singles matches against the host Michigan Wolverines. Sophomore Ana Vladutu upset No. 25 Emina Bektas in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and Zaini Sufi picked up DePaul's other victory in the set with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Sara Remynse. In other matches, Patricia Fargas fell in straight sets to No. 36 Ronit Yorovsky and Jasmin Kling dropped a match to No. 59 Sarah Lee. Senior Kelsey Lawson lost a tough 6-4, 6-4 match to Brooke Bolender.
In the nightcap, DePaul put up a strong performance against Arizona State, a program that finished the 2012-13 campaign ranked No. 26 in the nation.
The Blue Demons split their six singles matches with the Sun Devils on Friday afternoon. Fargas topped Leighann Sahagun in straight sets (6-4, 6-1), Lawson lost the first set to Ebony Panaho before rallying back for a three-set victory (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Jarrett Fisher handled Joanna Smith, 6-2, 6-0. Kling pushed No. 81 Desirae Krawcyk to a decisive third set before falling, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Friday at the Michigan Invitational opened up the 2013-14 season for the Blue Demons, who are coming off a 15-win season a year ago.
The tournament continues tomorrow morning in Ann Arbor, Mich. Tomorrow's action will feature doubles matches against Michigan and Tulane, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET, and will conclude with a slate of singles matches against Purdue at 3 p.m. ET.
