Blue Demons Blow Away Competition at DePaul/Lewis Invitational
Sept. 30, 2012
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The DePaul women's tennis team went 26-5 overall in singles play and picked up another 12 wins in doubles during a productive start to the season at the 2012 DePaul/Lewis Invitational at Romeoville High School.
"We had a great tournament," said head coach Mark Ardizzone. "All the teams got a lot of tennis and the weather cooperated very nicely. Special Thanks to Lewis University, Romeoville High School and Peter Tombasco and his staff for everything that they did. It is great to win the top flights of your own tournament and even better when your players are playing each other in the final."
The three-day event, which wrapped up Sunday, September 30, saw the Blue Demons drop just three singles matches to opposing teams as freshman Jarret Fisher went 10-1 by herself at the tournament. Fisher was simply dominant in Flight D, only losing six games all weekend and also won a pair of extra matches in Flight C.
"They played a spirited match, but still showed incredible team spirit by cheering for each other and having fun while playing hard," said Ardizzone. "Both girls played great getting to the finals. Rebeca has really been working on some things and Kelsey gives her all every match and is one of our most consistent performers."
Fisher was also a flight winner in the "D" draw, beating Lewis University's Jill Wetmore 6-0, 6-0.
In Flight B doubles, Zhavia Gray and Fisher took the bracket with a 8-4 win over Ashton Nisbet and Carolina Abello.
The Blue Demons also set up a all-DePaul final in Flight A between Matea Cutura and Carolin Neumann, which was called off due to an injury. Co-champions were declared as DePaul players ran first, second and third in the flight.
"Matea had an outstanding singles performance in her first college tennis," said Ardizzone. "I'm also really proud of Carolin for getting to the finals. She has had a great fall and it really showed in her performance. Ana Vladutu also did great, beating two number one players from other schools. We went a combined 9-1 in flight a with the only loss to our own team."
Zaina Sufi claimed third-place in Flight C with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Milwaukee's Dana Shannon. She then teamed up with Lawson in doubles to take the backdraw over Milwaukee's Kelly Fritz and Shannon, 8-2, rebounding from a first round loss on Friday.
Patricia Fargas, who dropped her first round singles match in the 2012 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships will play next in doubles with teammate Jasmin Kling on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Kling will also begin qualifiers in singles on Tuesday at the same tournament. Next up for the Blue Demons will be a trip to the three-day Wildcat Invitational from Friday, October 12 through Sunday, Oct.14 in Evanston, Ill.
