Final Results - Wildcat Invitational
EVANSTON, Ill. - DePaul freshmen Rebeca Mitrea and Carolin Neumann along with sophomore Kelsey Lawson each tallied a win on the final day of competition at the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational. The Blue Demons tallied 17 wins during the three-day invitational.
After a morning coaches meeting, it was decided that each student-athlete would play just one match and the brackets would be left uncompleted. Had the brackets played out, Mitrea would have competed for the D-Flight singles championship. Instead, the Blue Demon freshman was satisfied with her weekend performance - finishing with three singles wins and teamed-up with Cali Gustafson for a trio of doubles victories.
Mitrea put an exclamation point on her weekend on Sunday with a two-set (6-4, 6-1) win over Wisconsin's Carolina Bauer. All of Mirtea's singles victories came in two sets and she never allowed her opponent to win more than five total games.
Playing in the A-Flight, Lawson posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over South Carolina's Katerina Popova. Lawson went 2-1 on the weekend with her lone loss coming at the hands of No. 3 Linda Abu Mushrefova from Northwestern on Saturday.
Carolin Neumann posted her first collegiate victory in the C-Flight. The freshman recorded a hard-fought three-set win over Western Michigan's Maria Nivia. Neumann won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second set 6-1. Neumann and Nivia traded points and games in the third set before the Blue Demon freshman won the deciding set 7-6 (6).
The Blue Demons return to the court next week in Houston at the Rice Invitational. The three-day invitational begins on Oct. 7.
