Singles Brackets - Final Results
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The DePaul women’s tennis team closed out the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday at the Vandy Christie Tennis Courts with a pair of wins from freshmen Samantha Kaneta and Kelsey Lawson.
The Blue Demons, who were facing some of their toughest competition to date this season, finished the three-day tournament with 17 total wins, while Katarina Milinkovic made the championship of the D-singles flight.
Milinkovic, who reached the championship of her bracket by defeating a Minnesota player in the opening round and then two straight student-athletes from South Carolina, fell in her fourth match, when USC’s Anya Morgina took home championship honors with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Milinkovic finished the weekend with an impressive 3-1 record while the senior improves to 4-4 this season and 75-33 all-time in singles.
Kaneta finished the tournament strong with a pair of wins – one of Saturday and another today. The freshman topped Minnesota’s Marinana Spilca 7-6 (2), 6-2 to finish the weekend 2-2 in singles action.
Lawson also picked up her second win of the weekend when she defeated UIC’s Ilinca Critescu 6-1, 6-4.
The Blue Demons take a week off before traveling to Michigan for the ITA Midwest Regional, Oct. 22-26.
DePaul last played in Ann Arbor for the NCAA Tournament in May of 2010, while the Blue Demons have seen success at the ITA Regional the past two seasons. In 2009, current senior Selma Salkovic and 2009 senior Anna Redecsi won the doubles bracket, while Redecsi reached the semifinals of the Main Singles Draw.
In 2008, current Blue Demon assistant coach Dunja Antunovic and her doubles partner Kristen Gambrell made the ITA regional finals after taking the No. 7 doubles team in the country.
