ANN ARBOR, Mich. - DePaul's No. 31 doubles team of Selma Salkovic and Gia McKnight along with singles standout Katarina Milinkovic advanced in their respective brackets on Saturday at the Midwest ITA Regional hosted by Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Salkovic and McKnight, who received a first round bye as the No. 3 seed in the Regional, overcame Nino Mebuke and Miriam Westerink from Eastern Michigan, 8-4 in the second round of action. The Blue Demon pair is slated to face the Michigan duo of Michelle Sulahian and Sam Crister on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
With five Blue Demons - newcomers Kelsey Lawson and Christiana Raymond along with Gia McKnight, Selma Salkovic and Milinkovic all playing in the main singles draw it was veteran trio who advanced to the second round.
McKnight topped Amy Recht from IPFW 6-4, 7-6 (4), while Salkovic and Milinkovic both received first round byes as seeded singles players.
In the second round, Salkovic fell to Notre Dame's Kristin Rafael 7-6 (4), 6-0, while Milinkovic topped Gabby Steele from Ohio State 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the tournaments' Round of 16.
Milinkovic follows 2010 graduate Anna Redecsi, who also played in the Round of 16 at 2009 at the Midwest Regional. Redecsi eventually advanced to semifinals, but fell to Kristy Frilling from Notre Dame. Frilly, a junior this season, would also face Milinkovic in the semifinals if both players continue to advance.
