CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s tennis team serves up the 2012 Spring season at the Northwestern Invitational, Jan. 13-15 at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center.  The three-day tournament sees the Blue Demons tangle with student-athletes from No. 65 LSU, No. 12 Northwestern and City of Chicago rival UIC.

Action begins on Friday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles beginning at 2 p.m.  Saturday’s schedule starts at 9:30 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by singles action in the afternoon.  The tournament concludes on Sunday with a round of singles.

DePaul head coach Mark Ardizzone has always scheduled his team to play the best teams in the country and this season is no different.  Throughout the season, DePaul is set to play 10 ranked teams with six of those teams currently ranked in the top 30 while SMU (No. 31) and NC State (No. 34) make their way into the top 35.

With the Spring Season on the horizon, Patricia Fargas begins the second half of her freshman year ranked No. 9 in the Midwest Regional rankings.  The rookie from Barcelona, Spain tallied a 9-5 record in singles including a 2-1 mark against nationally ranked opponents.  The Fall season saw Fargas became just the third women’s tennis player in DePaul’s program history to reach the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Main Singles Draw.

Fargas and her doubles partner Rebeca Mitrea also enter the Spring ranked No. 9 in the Midwest Region after compiling a 4-2 mark in the Fall.  The freshmen tandem reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regional and won their final two matches of the Fall.

On the singles court, Mitrea tallied a 9-2 record and finished out the Fall on a four-match winning streak.

This weekend’s tournament will be the first for Blue Demon newcomer Jasmin Kling, who joined the roster in January.  The Heilbronn, Germany native comes to DePaul having reached a WTA ranking of No. 1084 in singles and No. 1088 in doubles.  Kling also ranked as high as No. 4 in Germany in 18 and unders.

Following this weekend’s tournament, DePaul returns to Evanston to play No. 15 Vanderbilt at the Combe Indoor Center on Jan. 20. The next day DePaul hosts Cleveland State and Chicago State at the Lakeshore Athletic Club.  The doubleheader dual begins at 2 p.m. on Jan. 21.
