EVANSTON, Ill. Sophomore Kirsten Gambrell of the DePaul women’s tennis team took second place in her flight as the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational came to a close on Sunday.  The Blue Demons concluded a weekend of competition at the Combe Tennis Center with eight doubles victories and two wins in singles play.

Saturday’s singles action saw Gambrell pick up two points with a three-set win over Leigh Walsh of Utah.  After falling 0-6 in the first set, Gambrell rallied with a 6-4 victory in the second frame and a 6-0 win in the third set.  The Blue Demon sophomore notched an additional two points in doubles play and finished the tournament with four points in the Flight D standings.  Gambrell teamed with senior Gergana Ganeva for an 8-3 win over Ashley Moccia and Yumi Matsuto of Western Michigan before she paired with senior Bojana Murisic for an 8-2 victory over WMU’s Amanda Moccia and Yuka Kobayashi. 

Murisic placed second in the Flight D standings after she and freshman Katarina Milinkovic gave the Blue Demons two more doubles victories over Moccia and Kobayashi.  The DePaul tandem defeated WMU’s pair by a score of 8-6 on both Friday and Saturday.

Saturday’s doubles competition saw the Blue Demons trump two pairs from Utah in Flight B.  Senior Anja Mihaldinec joined Milinkovic for an 8-4 victory over Emily Kwok and Walsh, while junior Dunja Antunovic paired with Gambrell for an 8-4 win over Erin Monson and Kwok.

DePaul knocked off two teams from WMU in Saturday’s doubles action.  Antunovic and Milinkovic posted an 8-4 win over Noriko Saruta and Ashley Moccia in Flight A, while junior Beatrix Csordas and freshman Selma Salkovic topped Priyanka Parekh and Matsuto in Flight C.

The Blue Demons open their 2008 dual schedule on Saturday, January 19 with a home doubleheader at the Lakeshore Athletic Club.  DePaul hosts Butler at 1 p.m. (CST) before taking on Western Illinois at 5 p.m.
