No. 62 DePaul Takes on No. 1 Northwestern, No. 20 Florida State, and Alabama



CHICAGO DePaul’s No. 62-ranked women’s tennis team returns to the courts for the first time in 2009 with one last tournament before they begin its dual portion of the schedule.  The Blue Demons travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Wildcat Invitational hosted by No. 1 Northwestern.  In addition to the Wildcats, the tournament also features No. 20 Florida and Alabama.

The team is led by Dunja Antunovic, who earned an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rank of 109.  The senior boasted a fall record of 8-5, including wins against Northwestern’s Nazlie Ghazal on the singles courts and a doubles victory over No. 20 Georgia Rose and Lauren Lui. 

Antunovic teams up with Kirsten Gambrell, once again, after unprecedented success in the fall.  The duo holds a 6-4 record, including a second place finish at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship and were rewarded with a ranking of No. 36.

Also earning ITA Rankings, Anna Redecsi earned a No. 26 rank in the Midwest Region after finishing the fall season with a three-match winning streak. 

Gia McKnight and Selma Salkovic are ranked No. 14 in the Midwest Region doubles rankings.  The freshman/sophomore combo accumulated six victories in the fall season.  In addition, McKnight led the team with 11 singles victories.

Overall, DePaul posted a 48-42 combined singles record during fall competition and a 31-19 doubles record.

Play will run continuously at the Wildcat Invitational beginning Friday morning until its conclusion around 6 p.m. On Saturday, action runs from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. save for a break from 2-4 p.m. The tournament concludes on Sunday with two rounds of doubles beginning at 10 a.m.
