Women's Tennis Battles in Evanston
EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 45 DePaul women's tennis team tallied six wins on day one of the Wildcat Invitational on Friday at the Combe Indoor Tennis Center. The No. 9 pair of Selma Salkovic and Anna Redecsi won their doubles match while each was victorious in singles action. Squaring off with student athletes from No. 2 Northwestern and No. 22 Vanderbilt, the Blue Demons tried different combinations, while Katarina Milinkovic and Kirsten Gambrell each played for nearly three hours before both dropping hard fought three-set matches. Playing against No. 32 Chelsea Preeg from Vanderbilt, Milinkovic won the first set 6-2, but Preeg battled and won the final two sets 6-2, 6-1. In one of the most exciting matches of the day, Gambrell evened her match with Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson by winning the second set 6-3. The third set was back-and-forth before Robertson won the last two games and took the third set 7-5. Redecsi used three sets to take her match from Vandy's Keilly Ulery 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Salkovic dropped her first singles match to No. 31 Catherine Newman from Vanderbilt before bouncing back to defeat Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova 6-4, 7-5. Gia McKnight and Sandra Zmak also won their respective singles matches, both in two sets and against Vanderbilt student-athletes. McKnight topped Rachael Dillon, 6-3, 6-4 while Zmak defeated Hannah Blatt 6-4, 6-3. In doubles action, Redecsi and Salkvoic disposed of the Vanderbilt pair of Catherine Newman and Jackie Wu 8-2 for DePaul's only doubles win of the day.
