Jan. 16, 2014
CHICAGO -- The DePaul women's tennis team travels to Evanston, Ill., on Friday for its final tune-up before dual matches begin next week.
The Northwestern Winter Classic, hosted by Northwestern University, begins Friday and lasts through Sunday.
For the Blue Demons, it will be their first competition since playing at the Northwestern Fall Invitational in early November.
DePaul finished with 39 singles wins in the fall, highlighted by Patricia Fargas' 8-5 mark and berth in the ITA Midwest Regional semifinals in Ann Arbor, Mich., in October. In addition, Zaina Sufi posted a 9-3 fall record. Finally, Ana Vladutu won two singles matches, including a triumph over Michigan product Emma Bektas, who was ranked No. 25 in the country at the time. Vladutu's 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Bektas at the Michigan Invitational on Sept. 20 propelled her into the national rankings; she comes into the spring season No. 52 in the country.
Following the Northwestern Winter Classic this weekend, DePaul opens up its dual slate on Jan. 25 against San Jose State in College Station, Texas. The Blue Demons will then play either Texas A&M or Mississippi State the following day.
After the trip to Texas, DePaul returns home for three straight home matches in Chicago. On Jan. 31, the Blue Demons face TCU at 1 p.m. February opens with home matches against Louisville (Feb. 1, 2 p.m.) and UIC (Feb. 2, 1 p.m.).
